YSV is looking for enthusiastic, patient, and safety-conscious sailing instructors to teach youth summer camps this season. As a Sailing Instructor, you’ll work directly with campers ages 8–17, delivering high-quality on-water and classroom instruction while creating a positive, encouraging experience every kid will remember.
Responsibilities
- Deliver daily sailing instruction to youth campers across skill levels — from beginners through intermediate sailors
- Teach rigging, points of sail, steering, sailing maneuvers, safety procedures, and capsize recovery
- Supervise campers on and off the water, maintaining a safe environment at all times
- Assist with boat rigging, equipment setup, and daily facility operations
- Communicate clearly and professionally with campers, parents, and program staff
- Support STEM-integrated curriculum activities as part of the YSV camp program
- Participate in staff meetings, training days, and end-of-season debrief
Qualifications
Required:
- US Sailing Level 1 Instructor Certificate (current)
- CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain before start date)
- Experience working with children or youth in an instructional or camp setting
- Strong communication skills and a genuine enthusiasm for working with kids
- Ability to work outdoors on the water in all summer weather conditions
Preferred:
- Experience as a competitive sailor or sailing coach
- Prior camp counselor or youth program experience
Compensation & Details
- Seasonal position, May–August 2026
- Competitive hourly rate, commensurate with experience and certifications
- On-site at Fort Monroe, Hampton, VA
