Christopher Newport University Announces Partnership With Youth Sailing Virginia for Captains Sailing Program

September 23, 2021 – NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Christopher Newport University and Youth Sailing Virginia have announced a new partnership to support the Captains’ collegiate sailing program, providing a venue for CNU Sailing to practice and host competitive regattas.

With the “sailing stadium” venue created by Youth Sailing Virginia in Hampton, Va., conditions are ideal to support and promote college style sailboat racing. Sailors from Christopher Newport will practice from YSV’s Sailing Center and the City of Hampton’s Mill Creek Pier. Throughout the fall and spring collegiate sailing seasons, CNU will host events that attract sailing teams from Universities throughout the East Coast to the City of Hampton, the home of Christopher Newport sailing.

The Christopher Newport Sailing team has been a part of Captains Athletics since the early 1970’s and has competed as members of the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) for nearly four decades. The Captains sail in one of the most challenging conferences in the country, the Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) and face nationally-ranked programs in virtually every regatta in which they race.

The addition of a collegiate program to YSV’s Learn to Sail and High School Racing programs provides access and extends opportunities for sailors from the community to continue to learn life skills that will benefit them for life. Youth Sailing Virginia is a non-profit accredited Community Sailing Center established to teach life skills to youth and their families in Hampton Roads through safe, fun, and educational sailing programs, inspiring learning, personal growth, and leadership that provide pathways for their future.
